At-Home Craft: Make Your Own Shaker

It’s craft time! Join Sarah from the Seattle Symphony’s Education & Community Engagement team as she shows you how to make your own shaker.

What you’ll need

  • One empty toilet paper tube
  • Coloring supplies
  • 2 three-inch squares of parchment paper or wax paper
  • 2 rubber bands
  • 1–2 tablespoons of dried lentils or rice (uncooked)

Steps to make your instrument

  • Color and decorate the toilet paper tube.
  • Place one paper square over one hole on the tube and secure it with a rubber band.
  • Pour lentils or rice into the tube from the remaining open hole.
  • Cover the remaining open hole with the second piece of paper and use the second rubber band to secure. Now, with the lentils or rice inside, both sides of the tube with paper are covered with paper and secured with a rubber band.
  • Shake your shaker to the beat of your favorite music!
