Chia-Ying Lin has been named the winner of the Seattle Symphony’s 2018–2019 Celebrate Asia Composition Competition for her piece entitled Ascolsia. The Seattle Symphony, conducted by Shiyeon Sung, will perform the world premiere at Celebrate Asia on Sunday, January 27, 2019.
The Seattle Symphony’s Celebrate Asia Composition Competition invites submissions from emerging composers who find inspiration and influences in Asian culture, music and traditions. The reviewing committee selected Lin’s work after receiving numerous local, national and international submissions.
Lin’s piece is inspired by the traditional music of Taiwan and, in particular, a style known as Beiguan (北管) music. Beiguan folk music is prevalent in Taiwan and can be heard at festivals, ceremonies, processions, celebrations, weddings, funerals and in music clubs.
In her work for the Seattle Symphony, Lin incorporates characteristics of Beiguan folk music into her score, including virtuosic solos in the woodwinds and percussion reminiscent of traditional Beiguan instruments.
Lin is rapidly establishing an international career. She was the 2018 winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize in the United Kingdom and received third prize at the prestigious International Jean Sibelius Composition Competition in Finland.
Described as having “manifest flair” (The Sunday Times), Lin’s Chanson Perpétuelle for piano was released on Orchid Classics in 2018 and her Occultra for orchestra was released on the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra’s album in 2014.
She studied composition with Tsung-Hsien Yang during her undergraduate degree at Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan and with Philip Grange during her graduate studies at the University of Manchester.
Celebrate Asia honors Seattle’s Asian-American community through a concert that explores the rich musical traditions of Asian countries. Now in its 11th year, the concert is an annual tradition where people and families of all ethnicities come to immerse themselves in an afternoon of cultural exchange and vibrant celebration.
