Celebrate Asia

The 12th annual Celebrate Asia shines a spotlight on the young American composer and pianist Conrad Tao who is taking the classical world by storm. Tao, a Lincoln Center Emerging Artist, joins us to perform his own work as well as George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue. Pre- and post-concert festivities bookend this celebration organized with Seattle’s vibrant Asian communities.

Tianyi Lu is making a name for herself across the continents as Assistant Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the St. Woolos Sinfonia in the UK.

Lori Matsukawa

Host

Lori Matsukawa is an Emmy award winning broadcast journalist with 40 years in the industry.  Recently retired after 36 years as an anchor and reporter at KING TV in Seattle, she previously anchored, reported and produced newscasts in Portland OR and Redding CA.

Adeliia Faizulina

Soprano

Uzbekistan-born composer Adeliia Faizullina (b.1988) has studied as a composer, singer, vocal coach, and Tatar quray instrumentalist. She received her bachelor’s degree in Voice in Auhadeev College of Music (Kazan, Russia) and bachelor’s degree in Music Composition in Gnesins Russian Academy of Music (Moscow, Russia). She has an MM in Music Composition from University of Texas at Austin, and is currently pursuing her DMA at the University of Southern California.  With a particular ear for cutting-edge vocal colors and an affinity for the music and poetry of Tatar folklore, Adeliia also writes music for chamber and symphonic genres.

Conrad Tao

Piano

Conrad Tao has appeared worldwide as a pianist and composer, and has been dubbed a musician of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by the New York Times, a “thoughtful and mature composer” by NPR, and “ferociously talented” by TimeOut New York. Tao’s career as composer has garnered eight consecutive ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards and the Carlos Surinach Prize from BMI.
