He has been a concerto soloist with the Seattle Symphony and the Northwest Chamber Orchestra. Before joining the Seattle Symphony in 1992, Rafanelli was a member of the Charleston (SC) Symphony Orchestra, and played at the Festival dei Due Mondi (Italy) and the Spoleto Festival (U.S.).

Rafanelli has a passion for food and wine and enjoys the culinary riches of the region, and can often be found at local wine-tasting events. He speaks Italian and some German. For 16 years he served on the faculty of the University of Puget Sound, where he was the Affiliate Artist in bassoon. His bassoon was made by the Wilhelm Heckel Co. in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1986.
