Garfield High School Orchestra

The Garfield High School Orchestra program, under the direction of Bryan Kolk, is a stand out among public high school programs and is one of the pre-eminent training grounds for young musicians in the Pacific Northwest. Graduates of the program have been admitted to study music at top schools throughout the country, including Oberlin, Curtis, Juilliard, Harvard, Eastman, Yale, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Cleveland Institute, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Berklee College of Music, University of Southern California and the University of Washington. The program has grown from 19 students in 1985, when previous director Marcus Tsutakawa joined the Garfield faculty, to 180 students (more than one-tenth of the school population).
